Right nearby is one of the world's most distinctive zoos. Though not necessarily as famous as some other zoos in the United States, such as San Diego and Atlanta, the Toledo Zoo is nevertheless very well known amongst zoo enthusiasts and experts for being unique in several different areas. Of greatest interest to most visitors is the Africa! Exhibit which is possibly the crowning achievement of the zoo. Visitors can see a huge number of species as they roam freely around their environment, created to be as similar to the African savannah and plains as possible. You will even see artificial termite mounds, which make the gazelles, zebra, rhinos and elephants feel as though they have some shielding from human eyes and predators alike.
The most important exhibit in the Africa! section of the zoo is without doubt the hippoquarium. One can only imagine the number of aquarium supplies it takes to keep this magnificent exhibit running all day long, every day. The hippoquarium includes both an above and below ground viewing center. This is great for visitors, as hippos spend 80% of their time walking and swimming in the water. The Toledo zoo was the first zoo in the world to build this kind of exhibit, and has received many commendations and publicity for its efforts. It has also served as a prototype for dozens of other zoos who have created such displays themselves.
If you like the idea of captive breeding programs for animals which are in danger of becoming extinct, the Toledo Zoo has something to offer as well. The snow leopard exhibit is one of the most successful at the Toledo Zoo as far as captive breeding programs go. Of the 300 captive snow leopards with ear tags in zoos around the world, five have been born right here in Toledo. The zoo is also one of the only ones to display the Kihansi Spray Toad, and to breed and look after the notoriously difficult to rear saddle billed storks of Africa.
